В 1967 оставил Йельский университет [ Yale University], пятнадцать месяцев воевал добровольцем во Вьетнаме [ Vietnam War], где был награжден "Бронзовой звездой" [ Bronze Star Medal] и "Пурпурным сердцем" [ Purple Heart]. После возвращения окончил в 1971 Нью-Йоркский университет [ New York University]. В 1974 дебютировал в кино как автор сценария и режиссер. В 1978 получил первый "Оскар" [ Oscar] за сценарий фильма "Полуночный экспресс" ["Midnight Express"]. Всемирная известность пришла к нему после выхода фильма "Взвод" ["Platoon"] (1986), основанного на его личном военном опыте - Стоун получил 4 "Оскара", многие критики сочли этот натуралистический и жестокий рассказ о войне, увиденной глазами одного из ее участников, лучшим фильмом о войне во Вьетнаме.
